About the webinar

CPD Points: 1.5
The rise of AI-enabled crimes brings significant challenges in detection, investigation, and prosecution, particularly concerning high-concern offenses such as audio/visual impersonation and fraudulent romance scams. ‘Pig butchering’ scammers. for example, create a false sense of security and friendship to deceive victims into making financial commitments under the pretence of lucrative returns and/or genuine connection.
This webinar explores the multifaceted role of AI in facilitating such crimes, focusing on: (1) mechanisms through which AI aids these criminal activities; (2) current methods and challenges in detecting these crimes, including the role of AI; (3) processes for obtaining and presenting evidence in legal contexts; and (4) difficulties in recovering proceeds of crime, particularly when cryptocurrencies are involved. Additionally, the webinar addresses issues relating to the part that human trafficking plays in the criminal syndicates behind the scams, and extraterritorial jurisdictional challenges.
