Overview

Explore the hidden histories, narratives, and contemporary realities of Aboriginal Sydney through a cultural competence lens. This course examines Aboriginal experiences of Sydney before and after colonisation, while exploring themes such as sovereignty, representation, identity, bias, and dominant historical narratives. Through self-reflection and critical engagement, participants will develop greater understanding of how histories, knowledge systems, and cultural perspectives shape contemporary Australia. Ideal for anyone interested in Aboriginal histories, cultural competence, anti-racism, social justice, and understanding the ongoing presence and significance of Aboriginal peoples in Sydney.

What you'll learn

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Develop knowledge about cultural competence capabilities
  • Develop a deeper and multi-layered knowledge and understanding about Aboriginal peoples, cultures and places in Sydney
  • Develop a greater understanding of how history, cultures and places are represented, contested and interpreted and how that relates to your own context

National Centre for Cultural Competence

This course is delivered in partnership with the National Centre for Cultural Competence, a leading academic and research centre within the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Indigenous Strategy and Services at the University of Sydney. We lead and cultivate critical conversations about belonging and dignity that equip people to implement culturally responsive changes in themselves, their organisations, and communities. With over a decade of experience, our innovative teaching, research, and engagement programs empower leaders, managers, teams, and individuals to lead with cultural responsiveness in diverse and complex environments.

Course aims and program

This course aims to deepen participants’ understanding of Aboriginal histories, experiences, and perspectives within the context of Sydney as Aboriginal land. Participants will develop cultural competence capabilities through critical reflection on history, representation, power, and the ways dominant narratives can marginalise Aboriginal knowledges and experiences. The course also supports participants to engage more thoughtfully and respectfully with Aboriginal perspectives in contemporary Australian society.

There are 5 modules in this course:

  • Module 1 - Representation and visibility in Aboriginal Sydney
  • Module 2 - Sovereignty and self-determination in a colonised place
  • Module 3 - People, past and present
  • Module 4 - Visibility in place
  • Module 5 - Resistance

This course is designed for anyone interested in developing a deeper understanding of Aboriginal histories, experiences, and perspectives in Sydney and across Australia. It is suitable for professionals, educators, students, community members, and organisations seeking to strengthen their cultural competence and engage more thoughtfully with Aboriginal peoples, histories, and knowledges.

This is a self-paced course. Participants have six months (182 days) from the day of enrolment to complete the course material.
