Anya Johnson

Anya Johnson is a Professor and Head of Discipline in Work and Organisational Studies at the University of Sydney Business School. Anya is also co-director of the Body, Heart and Mind in Business Research Group. This group integrates research from the fields of management, psychology, biology, and medical sciences to build research strength and excellence in the areas of employee performance, health, and well-being.

Anya’s research is in the field of Organisational Behaviour. Specifically, Anya investigates how employees regulate their emotions and cognitions in the workplace, and the relationship between the design of jobs and teams and outcomes such as well-being, mental health and performance. Anya’s work has been published in the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of Vocational Behavior, British Journal of Management, Annual Review of Organizational Psychology and Organizational Behavior and other peer reviewed journals. She is a registered Psychologist, an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a member of the Society of Industrial Organizational Psychologists and the Academy of Management.

Anya is the recipient of multiple awards such as the 2021 Ray Ball Prize for Best paper, the Australian Business Deans Council (ABDC) 2020 Award for Innovation and Excellence in Research and the University of Sydney Business School Engaged Research Award (2017). She is also Associate Editor for Group and Organisation Management.

Anya received her PhD from Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, her Masters in Occupational Psychology from the Institute of Work Psychology, University of Sheffield and her Bachelor of Psychology from the University of Western Australia. Before commencing her academic career, Anya worked in management consulting in Hong Kong, the UK and USA and in community development in Australia.

Anya is a highly regarded teacher and has received the University of Sydney Vice Chancellors Award for excellence in teaching in 2020 and the Business School Wayne Lonergan Prize for excellence in teaching in 2019. Anya’s focus is on guiding students to apply evidence from research and organisational theories to their practice at work and throughout their careers. Anya teaches in the area of organisational behaviour, communication, organisational change and development and career management.
